Artie Bennett, author of The Butt Book and Poopendous!, is back with another kid-loving title: Belches, Burps, and Farts: Oh My! No one writes about the things that happen with our digestive system (the stuff no one wants us to talk about except for kids who love potty humor) than Bennett. The best thing is that while kids are laughing at the illustrations or grossing out from the subtitles, such as “How a Fart is Made,” they can also learn, by accident, quite a few things about the human body. Guess what? SO can parents, teachers and librarians that share this book with elementary kids. Want to get kids interested in science and non-fiction books? Start with Bennett’s book about burps, belches, and farts!
So what might you learn?
- We cannot burp while on our backs. (I tried. This could be why we get heartburn at night if we sleep on our backs?)
- Cows might explode if they didn’t belch! (We can’t have a bunch of exploding cows running around.)
- Belching in China is not rude. (I’ve never been there, so I don’t know.)
- The more you belch, the less you’ll fart! (Let’s do an experiment!)
- Jellyfish do not fart. (But they do sting.)
Do you see what I mean? You will be so much smarter as an adult if you read this book, and your child will be mesmerized. (My almost four-year-old GIRL was.) At the very back of the book, there are several facts for adults or older elementary kids–sort of like a here’s the rest of the story section. These are even more factual than the rhyming main text, such as where the smell comes from when farting and foods that give us the most gas.
I’m a fan of Bennett, and he has another winner with this book. It’s one for every library–home, school, classroom, and public, for sure. You’ll find it at any major retailer or look it up at your library and request it if they don’t have it yet.
